INSTALLATION

Before you start:

Ensure that you have administrator's rights on your computer and either an Internet connection (see 4 and 5, below) or telephone (see 6, below).

WARNING: If you are trying to reactivate or reinstall the program, the registration process will fail on any PC other than the one you originally installed the program on or if your PC hardware has changed. Contact S&N if you have a reactivation failure.

To install:

  1. Insert the CD into the CD drive (if "autorun" is enabled the Setup Wizard window will open automatically; if not run "INSTALL.EXE", which you find by selecting the CD drive icon, and then selecting "Explore" via a right-click on your mouse).
  2. Follow the on-screen Wizard instructions to install the program.
  3. After installation has completed, run the application to activate your copy of "S&N Index".

Note: You must have an internet connection or phone to activate the program. (You can use any internet connection to get the Activation code e.g. any PC with an internet connection; just go to http://www.sandn.net/registration/).

To activate:

Choose one of the following activation options:

4. Activation over the internet (quick - automatic)

  1. Enter your serial number in the field provided.
  2. Fill in the registration form.
  3. Select the "Automatic activation over Internet" radio button (the program will send your registration form, serial number and unique code to the server, and if the data is valid you will get an activation code).
  4. Click on the "Activate" button to generate the Activation code and finish the process.
  5. Restart the program (you don't need to restart your computer).

5. Online registration (manual)

  1. Enter your serial number in the field provided.
  2. Select the "Go online to register" radio button to launch your default internet browser and the online registration form.
  3. Fill in the online registration form.
  4. Copy the "Activation code" from the online form.
  5. Paste or enter it manually into the Activation code field within the program's registration form.
  6. Click on the "Activate" button to finish the process.
  7. Restart the program (you don't need to restart your computer).

6. Activation over the phone

  1. Enter your serial number in the field provided.
  2. Call S&N on 01722 716 121 choose option "1". We will ask you for the following: your serial number, unique code, and personal details (name, surname, address, email).
  3. Select the "Manual registration over phone" radio button (to enable the activation code field).
  4. Enter the "Activation code" into the Activation code field (you will get it from S&N as soon as your details have been registered).
  5. Click on the "Activate" button to finish the process.
  6. Restart the program (you don't need to restart your computer).

 

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

If you chose full installation, remove the CD before using the program.

General Searching

  • To start the program click on the S&N Census Tree icon.
  • The search form allows you to enter a name with wildcards. This new index supports using wild cards
    anywhere in a name. To find variants of a name think carefully on where you need to place the
    wildcards.
  • The index uses an asterisk as a wild card character which will match one or more characters
    in the search field.
  • A minimum of three characters are required before a search can be made.
  • To find variants for someone called Bert Bayley you could use:
    Forename: *bert*
    Surname: Ba*ley

    This would find Albert, Robert and Bertrum with surnames Bailey, Bayley, Balley and many more
    matching variants.

    Using wildcards does slow down a searches, but performance can be improved by choosing to do a full install. This can be done at any time, even if you have already used the minimum installation option.

Viewing Families

To view the possible family of a person, right click on their name and select Find family.

  • You can also use the couple icon to view the currently selected person.
  • To return to the original search list click on the blue return icon.

Printing

You can print a list of matching results by clicking on the printer icon and then clicking on Print.

Troubleshooting

if you get an "Insulficent memory space" error, try the following:

  • Empty the recycle bin;
  • Reboot your PC;
  • Check virtual memory settings for paging file - 'System managed size' is recommended.
